How much does a commercial sign cost in Rhode Island?
Pricing varies with sign type, size, materials, illumination, mounting complexity, and quantity. A small illuminated storefront sign can start near $1,800. A monument sign or multi-tenant pylon runs significantly higher. Multi-location rollouts scope as programs with documented per-store pricing. How long does a typical commercial sign project take?
Most commercial sign projects move from approved design through fabrication and installation in 6 to 12 weeks. Permits, historic-district reviews, and structural engineering can extend the timeline. Rush production is available on certain product categories for time-sensitive openings.
Do I need a permit for my sign?
Almost every commercial sign in Rhode Island requires a municipal sign permit. Illuminated signs also require an electrical permit. Larger building-mounted signs may require a building permit and structural review. We handle the full permit process as part of every project.
What happens during a site survey?
We meet you at the property, photograph existing conditions, measure dimensions, identify substrate and electrical conditions, review applicable zoning and historic-district rules, and document anything that affects the project. Which Rhode Island cities have the strictest sign rules?
Newport's historic district enforces the strictest sign rules in the state, governing material, color, font, illumination, and mounting hardware. Providence's historic districts on Federal Hill, College Hill, the Jewelry District, and Wickenden Street apply district-specific guidelines. Wickford in North Kingstown and Pawtuxet Village apply preservation rules. We work all of them.
What ADA standards apply to my signs?
The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design apply to permanent commercial signs identifying rooms, restrooms, suites, and any sign required for navigation. Standards govern tactile character height, Braille spacing, contrast, finish, and mounting location. See our ADA / Braille Signs page.
Do I need landlord approval for my sign?
If you lease your commercial space, almost certainly yes. Most commercial leases include a sign clause requiring landlord approval before installation. Multi-tenant properties usually have a master sign program governing tenant signage. We read your lease, work to the criteria, and submit for approval as part of every project.
What is a master sign program?
A master sign program is a property-wide design document governing every sign on a multi-tenant building or campus. It specifies panel sizes, font selection, color rules, illumination standards, and replacement procedures. Property managers, developers, and multi-tenant property owners benefit from documented master sign programs. We draft new programs and audit existing ones.
Materials and Specifications Questions
What is the difference between channel letters and dimensional letters?
Channel letters are internally illuminated dimensional letters with LED lighting, used as primary building identification. Dimensional letters can be illuminated or non-illuminated, and span a broader material range including cast metal, brass, bronze, routed acrylic, and HDU foam. How long do illuminated signs last?
Modern LED-illuminated commercial signs run fifteen to twenty years on the original hardware before requiring LED module replacement. UL-listed components, proper electrical installation, and routine maintenance extend that lifespan further. Older fluorescent or neon signs require more frequent service and benefit from LED retrofits.
Should I choose a monument sign or a pylon sign?
A monument sign sits low to the ground and reads from the local street. A pylon sign rises high enough to read from highway speeds. Many Rhode Island municipalities now restrict new pole signs in favor of monuments. The right choice depends on the property, the road, and the local zoning. What is the lifespan of a vinyl banner?
Standard 13 oz vinyl banners run three to nine months outdoors. 18 oz heavy-duty vinyl runs longer. Mesh vinyl performs better in high-wind installations. For long-term banner needs, aluminum-faced signs or printed rigid substrates last significantly longer.

Do you service signs installed by other companies?

What does a maintenance contract cover?

How fast can you replace a damaged sign?
For panel replacements on monuments and pylons, three to five business days for standard work. For full sign replacement, six to twelve weeks depending on materials and permits. For emergency safety hazards, same-day or next-day response.
