Channel letters are the standard for one practical reason. They read clearly. The dimensional return depth gives the letterform structural presence on the wall, and internal LED illumination keeps the sign visible after dark without external lighting fixtures. A flat printed sign disappears at thirty feet and dies at sundown. A well-built channel letter reads from the parking lot, the road, and the sidewalk for fifteen years.

Types of Channel Letters
Face-Lit (Front-Lit) Channel Letters
The standard. Aluminum returns and back, translucent acrylic face, internal LED modules, trim-cap edge. The letter face glows from inside at night. The most cost-effective illuminated channel letter and the most common spec on retail, restaurants, and commercial buildings.
Halo-Lit (Reverse Channel) Letters
Aluminum face and returns with a clear or translucent back. LEDs mounted inside cast a glow against the building behind the letter, creating a haloed silhouette at night. Premium look used on corporate buildings, hospitality, professional services, and any property where understated nighttime visibility matters more than maximum brightness.
Combination (Front-and-Back-Lit) Channel Letters
Letters illuminated both through the face and behind, combining the bright face-lit visibility of standard channels with the architectural halo of reverse channels. Common on flagship retail and signature corporate buildings.
Open Face Channel Letters
Aluminum returns with no acrylic face, exposed LED modules visible inside the letter. A stylized retro look favored by hospitality, breweries, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
Trim-Cap Channel Letters
The standard finishing detail on face-lit channel letters. A vinyl or painted trim-cap edge frames the acrylic face and joins it to the aluminum return. We offer trim-cap in standard black, color-matched, and specialty finishes.
Exposed Neon and LED Neon Letters
Genuine neon or LED neon flex letters for venues, bars, and brand-driven storefronts that want the look. We fabricate, install, and service both.
Materials and LED Systems
Standard channel letter construction uses 0.040" or 0.063" aluminum for returns and back, 3/16" acrylic for the face, and UL-listed LED modules for illumination. Returns are typically 5" deep, with 3" or 6" available for specific design and structural needs.
We use commercial-grade LED systems with documented power draw, life expectancy, and warranty terms. The standard color is bright white. Color-matched and RGB-controllable systems are available for brand-driven specs. Every illuminated channel letter we build ships with a UL-listed power supply, full electrical documentation, and warranty paperwork for the property file.
Mounting Options
- Raceway Mounted
Letters mounted to a single horizontal aluminum box that contains the wiring and power supply. The raceway attaches to the building with fewer penetrations than flush mounting. Common on multi-tenant buildings, leased space, and any installation where landlord penetrations are restricted.
- Flush (Wall) Mounted
Each letter mounts directly to the building wall with concealed studs and individual wiring runs. The premium look. No visible box, no horizontal seam. The right spec for owner-occupied buildings, corporate identity, and historic-district installations.
- Backer Panel Mounted
Letters mounted to a fabricated backer panel that itself mounts to the building. Used when the wall surface is uneven, when historic preservation requires no wall penetrations, or when the design calls for a contrasting mounting field.
Sizing and Visibility
Channel letter sizing scales with viewing distance and building height. Storefront retail typically runs 12 to 24 inch letters readable from the parking lot. Multi-story buildings on major roads often run 36 to 60 inch letters or larger to read clearly at driving speed. We size the letter set based on actual sight lines, building height, and the speed of the road in front of your building.
Permits, Code, and Local Rules
Channel letters require a sign permit in every Rhode Island municipality. Most cities also require an electrical permit because of the internal illumination. Wall-mounted illuminated signs over a certain size may also require a building permit for structural review. We file all three in parallel.
Historic districts in Newport, Providence, and other preservation zones often restrict illumination type, return depth, and color, sometimes prohibiting face-lit channels in favor of halo-lit or non-illuminated dimensional letters. We design to the district rules from the first concept.
UL listing is required on every illuminated channel letter we build. The components are UL-listed and the assembled sign is fabricated to UL-48 standards.
